Description

KOGOJ'S "DUINO" CHESS

(maple and walnut wood)
Chess board – 52 cm x 52 cm
Chess pieces – from 5,5 cm to 12 cm

The design is based upon the rediscovered cosmic energies, which in Sanskrit are referred to as PRANA energies. The knowledge of shapes can be found in all ancient civilisations – a good shape equals good energy, etc. When one finds a natural egg-shaped stone in a riverbed, one can feel its good energy.
When playing chess, we are influenced by the PRANA energy, the MENTAL energy, the energy of the HAND and that of the ACTION. The energy of the shapes of this CHESS set is based upon 50 years of research on shapes and energies, aimed at creating an equivalent of the current version of congress CHESS. The chess pieces are combinations of the lingam shape, as materialised according to Sai Baba, a cross (see the cross made from a 2000 year-old oak in the permanent collection of the O. K. Nature Design Gallery) and the Lipizzan horse (the sculpture designed by Oskar Kogoj).
The name CHESS is derived from the word SOU HAM, meaning the INHALATION and EXHALATION of divinity, which comes from VEDANTA – the knowledge of VEDA SCRIPTURES – VYASA. The product is a masterpiece, made by the Novak family from Vnanje Gorice in the Ljubljana marshes.
The chess pieces are primarily made by hand, using the tools and techniques of ancient masters, as this is the only way to make such high-quality pieces that cannot be made by machines. The pieces may differ slightly from one another, however the point of the handwork is not to achieve completely identical items. We use modern varnishes and wood stains as well as materials of ancient masters (beeswax, shellac) to treat the surfaces of the pieces, which are made from the finest local wood types, such as walnut and maple.
First, the elements are cut, then hand-planed and processed by milling and boring. Then they are polished, coated with varnish three times and polished again. The final polish of the maple pieces contains beeswax and shellac for the walnut pieces.

EACH PRODUCT IS UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT DUE TO THE STRUCTURE OF WOOD!
THE PHOTOS ARE SYMBOLIC.
